Read film criticism for a useful point of view: performance, editing, sound, visual style, narrative, and emotional effect.
What to look for
Decide what kind of viewing experience you want before consulting the verdict. A demanding film, a comforting genre story, and a large-screen spectacle may succeed by different standards. Look for critics who explain those standards clearly.
Make the review useful
Read a spoiler-free assessment first, then choose whether to explore detailed interpretation. Distinguish the film from a particular presentation, including projection, subtitles, sound, or interruptions that affected a viewing.
Keep the limits in view
Do not confuse a confident opinion with an objective measurement of taste. A review can be thoughtful without predicting your reaction. Keep the reasons behind the judgment more prominent than its numeric expression.
Should critic and audience opinions always agree?
No. They can reflect different priorities and expectations. The explanation of those differences is often more useful than choosing one group’s score as the correct answer.
