Amazon book reviews
Read Amazon book feedback at the level of the work, the format, and the copy being sold. Those are related but different decisions.
What to look for
Look for the edition and format discussed by each reviewer. A critique of an audiobook narrator does not establish a print-layout issue, and a damaged delivery does not evaluate the author’s argument. Keep those observations in separate notes.
Make the review useful
For author outreach, consult Amazon’s book-specific guidance. KDP permits free or discounted copies without requiring or influencing a review; extra rewards such as gift cards invalidate it. Do not generalize that allowance into permission to buy favorable opinions.
Keep the limits in view
As a reader, note disclosed relationships and inspect the substance. Detailed criticism can be useful even when your preferences differ. A handful of comments cannot establish how every reader will experience the book.
Is a free book the same as buying five-star reviews?
No. Amazon’s KDP guidance sets specific conditions for free or discounted copies, including no required or influenced review. Paying for a predetermined favorable rating is a different arrangement.
